In 2012 the Queen will celebrate 60 years on the throne. The government has announced plans to create a four day weekend from 2nd to 5th June 2012.

There are a number of ways in which SSDC can support communities celebrate the Diamond Jubilee, including:

Community support - our Area Development Teams can give advice about organising a community event, fundraising, and signposting to other organisations.  Find and contact your area development team.

Community Resource Service - a range of equipment is available to the community to hire for all fundraising and community events (restrictions apply to non-community organisations). The art shop has a wide range of art & craft materials, and the Scrapstore has recycled waste from local business ideal for making decorations, costumes and using in craft activities at community events and at home both are available to everyone.

Your Councillor can give you advice and signpost parishes and groups to further support.  Find your councillor

Funding- there are no specific SSDC funds available to support Jubilee celebrations. Funding for one-off celebrations should be supported through local fund-raising and/or Parish and Town Councils, should they choose to support them.

Recycling and rubbish: Waste services are unchanged on Bank Holiday Monday 4 June, but collections on Tuesday to Friday will be one day later.  Check the Somerset Waste Partnership Bank Holiday Calendar (PDF document) for up to date information.

SSDC Initiatives

There will be a Beacon at Ham Hill Country Park on 4th June 2012. Jubilee Oak trees will be planted at Yeovil Country Park and Chard Reservoir Local Nature Reserve by the site volunteer teams. Countryside rangers will be able to advise members of the public on hosting events at our Country Parks and Local Nature Reserves (eg. advise on event management, posters/advertising, safety issues).

The Yeovil May Fayre will be moved to the weekend of 26th and 27th May in order to free up Yeovil Country Park for community events. If you would like to know more about making use of this facility please contact our Countryside Team.

Yeovil Town Council is organising a musical spectacular/fireworks extravaganza to take place on Saturday 2 June 2012 to help the people of Yeovil celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.
