Adverse Weather

In 2011, the Yeovil Town Centre Partnership purchased a supply of snow shovels to be issued to businesses who agreed to take an active part in responding to a severe weather event.

Snow shovels

In the past, areas of Yeovil Town Centre have become dangerous due to sheet ice. Grit/salt in the bins provided by Yeovil Town Council can be used by businesses to spread over an icy area to help clear it.

In severe weather events all the local authorities involved work closely together to respond to the difficulties these sorts of events present. Somerset Highways are responsible for gritting the road and pavement network and the map of the gritting network is published on Somerset County Council Website. South Somerset District Council support Somerset Highways by gritting some pavements in market towns, when they are unable to continue with normal litter clearance and other duties due to the weather conditions.

A number of businesses have kindly volunteered to assist in clearing snow and ice from outside their premises along Westminster Street, High Street, Middle Street and King George Street. This help is invaluable and allows Council staff to be active in clearing snow from pavements in high-risk areas, such as between car parks and shopping areas. It will also mean that snow clearance can be started much earlier than in the past as getting staff into the town centre from their depot can be delayed due to road conditions.
