According to Household Projections 2088-2033, in England, the
number of households are projected to be increased by 27% (Office
for National Statistics November 2010)
Other predicted trends by 2033, include:
- 33% of households will be headed by those aged 65 years or
over. This is a 26% increase from 2008
- 19% of the household population is projected to be living alone
this represents a 5% increase
- One person households are projected to increase by 159,000 per
year, this equates to two thirds of the increase
in households
Age UK highlights that 1 in 5 of the UK population is currently
of State Pension age.
South
Somerset Trends and Issues highlights that life expectancy has
and continues to increase.
Between 1998 -2008:
Males increased from 77.4 to 79.6 years of age (2.8%)
Females increased from 82 to 83.7% years of age (2%)
The proportion of people in the 65+ age group in 2008 was 20.9%.
In 2010 it was estimated to be 21.8%, in 2030 it is likely to
increase to 31.3%. The number of older people is increasing, it is
estimated that this will rise by 64.6% by 2030.
The number of very elderly people, (aged 85 years+) is estimated
to rise by 234%, from 4,700 in 2008 to 11,000 in 2030. Somerset is
expected to experience an increase of 231%
Over the same timescale the number of 85 year olds providing
