Countryside - Activities and Events![]() Listed below are all our countryside events for June and July. If you would like to know what is happening throughout the whole year, download the Booking is essential for all events. To confirm your place on any event you will need to pay in advance. For all children's events where parents/guardians are not required to stay, all children must be registered with SSDC. You can download the The Rangers at Ham Hill Country Park now run a range of bushcraft courses throughout the year for families, adults and private groups. These courses offer opportunities to learn more about the great outdoors in your local Country Park! JUNE EVENTS Yeovil Country Park Dog Show Sunday 21st June 11.00am – 4.00pm With a range of pet related stalls, educational displays and lots of information from the experts, there will be plenty to amuse dogs and owners alike. Fun dog show classes start at 12.00noon, with registration from 11.00am. Badger Walk at Ham Hill Country Park Wednesday 24th June 7.00pm – 9.30pm A short walk gives us the time to learn about the badgers lifestyle, habitats and behaviour, whilst the rest of the evening will hopefully be spent watching the badgers in their natural environment. Adults £5.00, Concessions £2.50. JULY EVENTS Badger Walk at Ham Hill Country Park Wednesday 1 July 7.00pm – 9.30pm Spend an evening watching some of Ham Hill's most elusive nocturnal inhabitants. A short walk gives us the time to learn about their lifestyle, habitats and behaviour. The rest of the evening will hopefully be spent watching the badgers in their natural environment. An adult must accompany all children. Adults £5.00, Concessions £2.50. Bat Walk at Chard Reservoir Wednesday 8th July 8.30pm – 10.30pm Join countryside ranger Rachael Lappage for a walk around Chard Reservoir to learn about the natural history of bats. We will use bat detectors to listen to the bats as they echolocate and watch them catching their prey along the woodland rises. An adult must accompany all children. This walk is weather dependant – you will be notified if this event is cancelled or postponed. Adults £5.00, Concessions £2.50 Forest School Fun at Ham Hill Country Park Sunday 12th July 10.00am – 4.00pm Come to Ham Hill and take part in lots of fun Forest School activities in the Country Park. Whether you like building dens, playing games in the woods, weaving or creating stories – there should be something exciting for you. Come to the Ham Hill Centre to pick up a leaflet showing where activities are taking place and times, and for refreshments. Free! No need to book. A View from Ham Hill Thursday 16th July 7.30pm - 9.00pm Have you ever wondered what the hill is in the distance, or what that village is whilst standing on the top of Ham Hill? This evening, join one of the 'Friends of Ham Hill' who lives locally, who will point out all the features you can see below. Education Officer, Grace Hall will also help to interpret the fascinating Ham Hill landscape, which is a mystery to many! An adult must accompany all children. Adults £5.00, Concessions £2.50 Chard Countryside Day Saturday 18th July 11.00am – 4.00pm Join us for another day celebrating the wildlife of Chard Reservoir Local Nature Reserve and all the communities that use the site. A free event for all the family with plenty of activities. Organised by South Somerset District Council and Action for Chard Town. Drop in anytime to the meadows at the reservoir. Free! No need to book. Download the Family Bushcraft Day at Ham Hill Country Park Thursday 30th July 9.00am – 5.00pm A chance for adults and children to learn together the basics of bushcraft. During the day the ranger team will teach you a variety of survival skills, ranging from shelter building, fire lighting, nature's larder and navigation, to camp craft and natural cordage. A fun and informative day in the unique setting of one of Ham Hill's more secluded areas. This event is suitable for accompanied children aged 11 and over. Download the Ham Hill Heritage Fayre Saturday 5th September 2009 11am - 5pm Join us for Ham Hill's biggest FREE event of the year - the Ham Hill Heritage Fayre! History will come to life yet again in another fantastic celebration of the thousands of years of Ham Hill history. From Iron-Age to Romans, Medieval to Victorian, there will be re-enactment displays/shows, craft demonstrations, hands-on activities and lots more to amaze, excite and fascinate people of all ages! There will be some favourites returning, and plenty of interesting new historic groups - prepare to see something a bit different! There will be countryside craft stalls, birds of prey, and plenty of eateries to choose from. Don't miss our 2pm performance, which you can be a part of! There will be an almighty fancy dress competition - come to the fayre in your outfit as either a mammal, bug, or bird of your choice! There will be various categories including ages, groups and schools (if your school would like to be involved please see contact details below). Don't miss TV wildlife personality Johnny Kingdom who will be judging the competition and will be joining us for the afternoon for the fun of the fayre. The event is free and open all day.
