Play parks

Find out where your nearest play park is, which parks we are currently working to improve and how we inspect the safety of our parks.

We own and maintain a number of play areas in the district.

Play park improvements

We are constantly seeking to improve our play parks. See which parks we are being worked on or recently completed:

Flagship playspace in Yeovil

Playspace

The Flagship Playspace is based upon the designs and ideas of young people of South Somerset. We wanted to create an environment in which children could play freely and safely, whilst having as much fun as possible. The designs submitted by the young people of South Somerset helped make this into a reality.

The playspace aims to inspire and engage young people with the exciting world of nature. The existing play area has been replaced and the area for the new playspace enlarged. We ensured that the new playspace was an enhancement of the existing landscape.

The Flagship Playspace project emerged as part of our Play Policy and Play Strategy.

The Flagship Playspace at the Yeovil Recreation Centre aims to help children and adults across the district reconnect with the outdoors through natural materials such as sand, water and plants. Facilities include:

  • Tree house walkways with rope bridges, net tunnels and climbing walls
  • Shipwreck
  • Skull and snake themed tunnel slides
  • Aerial runway/zipline
  • Tyre swing
  • Large sand pit
  • Water play
  • Use of ground contouring, boulders and plants to enhance the landscape and create an interesting space for play
  • Terraced seating area

Refreshments are available at 'The Galley' during the summer and selected weekends, which sells hot and cold drinks, snacks, ice creams and children's pirate-themed merchandise.

Outdoor seating is also been provided outside.

Playground safety

We regularly inspect our play areas and organise training to assist play area providers to inspect their play areas in line with nationally recognised good practice.

If you're a play provider, you can attend either our 'Routine Visual Playground Inspection Training' course or an 'Introduction to Playground Management' training course.

These training courses assist play area providers to inspect their play areas in line with nationally recognised good practice and help you to understand the core principles of playground management.
