The Heritage Team at South Somerset District Council is responsible for the Museum of South Somerset in Hendford, where we have permanent and temporary exhibitions on local history. Entry to the Museum is free and the building also contains a Tourist Information Centre.

The museum has a Discovery Area where children can undertake various activities including. Our Heritage Outreach Officer also visits schools to give presentations on topics from World War II, Romans, Victorians and local history since the 1930's.

History of Yeovil and South Somerset

Yeovil and South Somerset is an area rich in history. There is evidence of occupation here since the Iron Age and in Roman times this was an important agricultural area.

The Heritage Team are actively collecting local history material and information. We also provide an identification and enquiry service.

South Somerset District Council hold a stock of books on the local history of South Somerset. The list of books is below and if you wish to purchase a publication, please use the contact details on the right of this page. When e-mailing to request a book, please let us know the title of the book and how many copies you require. There is no charge for postage.

Services

The Heritage Team provide a wide range of historical activities and resources for schools and local groups. We also identify finds and provide an enquiry service on local history. Please note however, that we cannot provide valuations.

Service Standards for the Museum Team

The Heritage Team at South Somerset District Council abides by the Service Standards set by the Museums and Libraries Association. We also have our own internal service standards.
