Social/Community Enterprises are organisations trading for social purpose with profits reinvested rather than going to shareholders.

The following organisations provide information, advice, practical support and finance to emerging or developing social/community enterprises.


SSDC Economic Development Service - Provide free, confidential and impartial advice to individuals looking to start up or develop a business



Community Council for Somerset - Offer direct support for anyone with a business idea who is considering the social enterprise route. Alternatively they can signpost to specialist advice organisations supporting business start-ups or expansion in Somerset.    



Seedbed- Seedbed is one of ten projects in the UK funded by the Cabinet Office backed Social Incubator Fund. It is a new type of social accelerator programme that will offer intensive support and investment for early-stage social ventures in the South West


Heart of the South West Business Support - Launched in September 2013, Heart of the South West Business Support exists to help businesses across Devon and Somerset.  It delivers a range of FREE or subsidised business support services for people looking to start a business and for existing businesses looking to develop and grow.


Somerset Social Enterprise Fund (Hosted by Somerset Community Foundation) -Provide loan finance to support new and established social enterprises.


SPARK - A range of support services to the Voluntary and Community Sector including social and community enterprises.


CAN Invest - CAN Invest supports voluntary, community and social enterprises (VCSEs) to build sustainable businesses by providing capital and business support.


Co-operatives UK- Co-operatives UK is the national body that campaigns for co-operation and works to promote, develop and unite co-operative enterprises.


Financial Conduct Authority -  Registration of Co-operative Societies, Community Benefit Societies and the re-registration of old Industrial and Provident Societies.



Inspire 2 Enterprise - Free-to-access service for the Social Enterprise Sector providing information, specialist advice and support from start-up to initial growth and beyond.


Locality - Locality's role is to help Community Enterprises to go further and faster using the tried and tested SOAR model to support Community Enterprises at each stage of their journey.


Plunkett Foundation- Helping predominantly rural communities to set up and run community-owned shops, co-operative pubs and community food enterprises.


Power to Change- Charitable Trust established with a £150m endowment from the Big Lottery that will make grants to support, develop and grow community enterprises.


School for Social Entrepreneurs- Supports individuals who are starting & growing social enterprises and community organisations via unique action-learning courses.


Social Enterprise Mark CIC  - Social Enterprise Mark CIC is the UK certification authority for social enterprise. The Social Enterprise Mark independently proves when a business or organisation puts profits towards social or environmental good.


Social Enterprise UK- The national body for social enterprise. They represent their members and help grow the social enterprise movement.


Social Firms England - Social Firms are trading businesses that create jobs or training for people who are job-disadvantaged due to discrimination. Social Firms England is the go-to expert for specialist business support, resource material and case studies to develop social firms.


UnLtd - UnLtd operates a unique model by investing directly in individuals and offering a complete package of resources; from Awards of funding to ongoing advice, networking and practical support.
