How Do I Claim

You can make a application online by completing an e-form

Important Notes:

It is important that you fill in the form and submit it to us straight away to avoid losing monies.

We will need evidence in support of your claim. Providing it all with the form will help us assess your claim quickly and pay you.

Please do not delay submitting your application form, even if all the evidence is not available.

Housing Benefit and/or Council Tax Support normally starts the Monday following the date we receive your application. It is important that you submit your claim straight away. You can ask for your claim to start from an earlier date, this is known as backdating which can be applied for online.

Other Ways to Claim

A claim for Housing Benefit may be made via the Department for Work and Pensions whenever a claimant is making a claim for Universal Credit (UC), Job Seekers Allowance (JSA),  Employment support Allowance (ESA) Incapacity Benefit (IB), Income Support (IS) or Pension Credit (PC).

However, you cannot claim Council Tax Support through the Department for Work and Pensions, as it is not a welfare benefit.

Which form should I complete?

Change of address.

Living in South Somerset Already:

If you are already receiving Housing Benefit and/or Council Tax Reduction in the South Somerset District Council area a Change of address form must be completed this can be done online

Evidence to support a Change of Address Form.

All evidence required is detailed in the application form under the relevant sections.

You will need to provide:

  • Proof of rent that you pay.
  • Proof of any changes that you have declared on the application form.

Living Outside of South Somerset:

If you are receiving Housing Benefit and/or Council Tax Reduction in another area and you are moving to the South Somerset area a full new application form must be completed.  You can make this claim online.  

If you submit your application before you move, you must notify us as soon as you have moved in.

New Applications/Claims

All new applicants/claimants need to complete our full application/claim form.  This can be completed online

Evidence to support a full new claim.

All evidence required is detailed in the application form under the relevant sections.

You will need to provide two forms of identity; one to show the national insurance number and one to show the address for the customer and any partner.

  • Proof of any income, savings and investments declared on the application.
  • Proof of any expenses declared on the application.
  • Proof of rent that you pay.
  • Proof of any non-dependants income and the interest received on any capital they hold.

Please Remember:

If you cannot provide all the evidence required with your application please do not delay submitting the form to us.  Submit it and send the missing evidence as soon as possible.
