What is the Home Aid scheme ?

The Home Aid scheme is the local Home Improvement Agency for residents of South Somerset . The scheme is one of a network of Home Improvement Agencies established nationwide to keep homes 'warm, safe and secure', enabling residents to remain living independently in their own homes.

Who is the scheme aimed at ?

The service is available to residents in South Somerset who are either over the age of 60, living with a disability, or who could be considered vulnerable.

The help you can receive may depend on your financial and personal situation, but we will be happy to advise you of the options available to you.

How can I access the service?

Anyone who is over the age of 60, living with a disability or who could be considered vulnerable can contact the service for advice and assistance.

If you are registered disabled, have a specific mobility issue or think that you may be eligible for a Disabled Facilities Grant from us, we will need to refer you to Social Services (Telephone : 0300 123 2224). They can arrange a visit from an Occupational Therapist who may be able to support an application for a grant .

What sort of help can I get?

Working with Social Services and other agencies, the Home Aid team can:

  • Help clients decide what work is required;
  • Draw up plans and specifications;
  • Help select suitable builders;
  • Help apply for grants or loans;
  • See the building works through from start to finish;
  • Fill out forms and generally help with any day-to-day problems that arise.

How much does the scheme cost?

The intention of the scheme is to keep costs as low as possible. Any costs (usually 12%) will be outlined before works commence.

All advice from the service is free, however if plans and specifications are required a 12 per cent charge is applicable. You will only need to pay this fee if you fund the work yourself, in all other cases the fees will be included in your application for financial assistance.
