Repairing the roof at Stocklinch village hall

A grant from South Somerset District Council (SSDC) will help with much needed work on the roof of the village hall in Stocklinch

£3,475 has been awarded by SSDC's Area North Committee towards the cost of the essential repairs and other scheduled maintenance work which will be carried out at the same time.

The village hall is owned by Stocklinch Parish Council but a separate charity, Stocklinch Village Hall Committee, was set up to manage and maintain the building.

The total cost of the Stocklinch project is £16,120.  The village hall committee is also receiving grants from the Parish Council and from Big LotteryAwards for All, as well as contributing from their own funds.

David Tucker, who chairs the village hall committee, said "Stocklinch Village Hall provides a much-needed and appreciated social and focal centre for all villagers 'from the cradle to grave'.  For those that find it difficult getting out, it hosts dinners, quiz nights, music appreciation nights, Lent Lunches, Harvest Suppers, educational presentations and our annual Christmas Dinner and pantomime.

"We have been patching the roof for many years, aware of the expense required to cover the costs of a new roof.  However, when it was reported that the roof was now in very poor condition and the tiles were no longer available, we knew we had to 'bite the bullet' and get it replaced.  Although only a small village of around 150 people, we have managed to raise several thousand pounds towards the cost, but this was well-short of the required total.  We were delighted when we were awarded a grant from The Lottery, but still fell short of our target figure so we were thrilled when SSDC agreed to fund the requested amount of £3,475."

Councillor Derek Yeomans, chair of the SSDC Area North Committee, said: "A well-maintained hall is especially important when there is no other public meeting place in a village, providing somewhere for all the events that bring people together and give a sense of community.  Stocklinch village hall committee are to be congratulated on all their efforts to take care of the hall and make sure it can be well used into the future."
