South Somerset families to benefit from free Playdays

17 communities of South Somerset are set to enjoy free activities this summer as part of the District Council's Playdays.

Beginning today in South Petherton, parents and children will be invited to take part in events across the district from Wincanton to Combe St Nicholas.

Young People's Officer at SSDC, Steve Barnes, explains more about the Playdays: "We offer these Playdays as a way giving families an exciting range of free activities during the summer holidays. They are a great way of bringing communities together and thousands of people come along to join in free fun.

"From getting up close and personal with birds of prey to drumming workshops these events will bring a range of free play activities to different communities. Playdays not only increase the range of play for residents but also offer the chance to meet people and make new friends.

"In time our aim is to empower the communities to take on the organisation of the Playdays and we can help with this transition by offering small grants and any support they need."

Councillor Sylvia Seal, South Somerset's Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture added: "This is part of South Somerset District Council's ongoing work to increase and improve play opportunities for children in the district. Playdays have a special relaxed atmosphere and we hope the communities come out in large numbers to enjoy themselves."

The Playdays run until the 9th of September, to find your nearest Playday visit www.southsomerset.gov.uk/playdays or go to the Facebook page www.facebook.com/PlayYouthSouthSomerset.

National Playday takes place on Wednesday 1 August at Yeovil Country Park where thousands of people are expected to descend for free fun including tree climbing, water wars and circus skills. The annual National playday event offers a huge variety of activities and experiences for children and young people across South Somerset and beyond to enjoy.
