Flying the Flag: Celebrating Armed Forces Day

Families are invited to join in the fun at the Family Fun Day at Riverside Park and Wyndham Park in Yeovil on Saturday 30 June 11.00am - 2.00pm.

The Flying the Flag Family Fun Day has been organised by South Somerset District Council to celebrate Armed Forces Day which is also on Saturday 30 June.

There will be plenty of free family activities on the meadow by the River Yeo (Riverside Park) that are themed around survival and flags, including survival skills, den building, fire lighting, flag making and bug hunting. You can also explore the rustic play trail recently installed and watch a chainsaw sculptor create new carvings for the park.

Wyndham Park will also be hosting a street fair as part of the celebrations which will include stalls, refreshments, a smoothie-making bike, archery plus lots more.

Becky Russell, Community Ranger at Yeovil Country Park said, "This is a perfect opportunity to explore this new area of Yeovil Country Park, discover its wildlife, play on the play trail, and celebrate Armed Forces Day by making your own flag and seeing if you would be equipped to survive in the wild!"

Councillor Sylvia Seal, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture at South Somerset District Council added, "With Yeovilton so close, and with so many Service families living in or near the town, we thought the Riverside Park area of Yeovil Country Park is a great space to create an appropriate display on this years Armed Forces Day. We are hoping for great weather at the weekend so why not bring a picnic to the park, join in the fun and then relax and enjoy the green space".

This is the last of a series of events within Yeovil Country Park over the last two years which have been supported by the Armed Forces Community Covenant Fund. South Somerset District Council was awarded £16,000 by the Fund to promote the aims of the Covenant that encourage activities which help to integrate the Armed Forces Community into local life, and to nurture public understanding and awareness of issues affecting the Armed Forces Community.

For more information about the grants, visit the MoD website at www.gov.uk and search 'Community Covenant'.

Riverside Walk is accessible from Birchfield Car Park at Lyde Road (BA21 5PN).
