Sale of Grade II listed building allows for investment opportunity

An historic barn could be given new life after it was sold by South Somerset District Council to a local resident.

The Grade II listed Burlingham Barn, in Tintinhull, had been part of the Council's asset portfolio which is undergoing a review, as part of the Council's commercial strategy, to ensure it offers the best value for residents and businesses in south Somerset.

The barn was identified as suitable for selling as it no longer serves any strategic purpose and will require substantial future maintenance costs to prevent its demise. Due to the barn's location, condition and it not being practicable for storage or business, the only realistic option was to invite offers via a local agent.

The barn now faces a brighter prospect with investment by the new owner planned in its future.

Councillor Henry Hobhouse, Portfolio Holder for Property, Climate Change and Income Generation said, "We are pleased this building has been sold to a local person who is looking to bring it back into use. The Council have considerable savings to make and could not find any strategic reason to spend the tax payers' money on maintaining a building that we simply no longer need to retain. It will continue to be protected through its listed status".

SSDC's Commercial Property Team is assessing a number of land and property assets currently owned by the District Council in order to ensure that all assets held are for community use, council operational needs, part of a strategic regeneration programme or purely for investment in order to generate income.

Each asset assessed by the team will be looked at to rate its performance under the above headings. Assets that don't meet a set of criterion will be offered for sale on the open market. Community Groups will also have the option to submit a business case to take on certain assets for their own use.

The income from the sale of assets will be used to invest in projects that create an income for the council to use in providing services to the district or to regenerate our towns and local facilities for the benefit of our communities.
