What is a Health Walk?

South Somerset's Health Walks Scheme is run by SSDC's Healthy Lifestyles Team and is an accredited Walking for Health Initiative. Our Health Walks are led by trained Health Walk Leaders and are a great way of getting exercise and meeting people.  From beginners to challenging walks there are walks suitable for everyone.

Why not take a health walk and enjoy the beautiful South Somerset countryside? You could make new friends, relieve stress and benefit your health. Walking is simple, free and one of the easiest ways to get more active, lose weight and become healthier. It's underrated as a form of exercise but walking is ideal for people of all ages and fitness levels who want to be more active.

Regular walking has been shown to reduce the risk of chronic illnesses, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, asthma, stroke and some cancers.   Read more about the benefits of taking a health walk. For more general information about Health Walks read the Frequently Asked Questions

For a fun and informal view of a Health Walk in the district have a look at the Health Walk Blog and YouTube clip, which have been compiled by South Somerset walker Terry Hitchcock.

Enjoy walking and fancy volunteering in your community?

Then why not sign up to become a qualified Health Walk Leader? The Healthy Lifestyles Team at SSDC run free Health Walk Leader training courses. This training is ideal if you would like to lead a health walk in your local area on a voluntary basis. It is a day of practical advice and includes a demonstration of a health walk and information on keeping people motivated. Find out more on the Health Walk Leader Training Page.

Accessible Walks

12 accessible walks routes have been put together by Access for all solutions. They are designed to be accessible for everyone and most of them are a loop so please check the distance before starting.

Buggy Walks

Buggy walks are designed to give everyone in South Somerset with young children a chance to exercise and meet new people. They are led by qualified Health Walk leaders and are suitable for both pushchairs and wheelchairs. Children remain the responsibility of the adult they came with. Visit the Buggy Walks page  to find out more.

Shorter Walks

If you are recovering from illness or injury or would just like a shorter walk these walks are for you. Currently there are shorter walks in Yeovil. These walks are aimed at beginners or those with walking difficulties. The walks are based on flat, even terrain, and distances range between 1-3 miles and last between 20-40 minutes.

Join a Walk

Our walks are all accredited by Walking for Health. Important note: if you are considering trying out any of these walks it is advisable to contact the leader first to ensure the walk is taking place.
