Ambitious Council Plan set for 2018/19 year
At a meeting of the Full Council on Thursday (22 February), Councillors endorsed the Annual Action Plan which commits the Council to deliver efficiency savings and generate new income towards meeting a funding shortfall of £6m annually by 2022.
The Council is confident that the Plan will not only meet that financial target but will still enable it to deliver on important priority regeneration schemes for towns, deliver more for small and medium sized businesses, bring forward housing to meet a growing need and maintain a focus on combatting homelessness and rough sleeping across the District.
Ric Pallister, Leader of the Council, commented, "I am delighted that members are working together to deliver for our communities and residents. At a time when other Councils are being forced to cut services, I want to pay tribute to the professionalism and commitment of our officers who, through hard work, have enabled us to maintain real ambition for our District whilst continuing to balance the books. This year promises to be exciting as we commit to deliver continuing improvements based on our Plan".
Alex Parmley, Chief Executive at South Somerset District Council added, "Whilst all councils are experiencing challenges financially, it is important we maintain our focus on our role in delivering for our communities. The Council Action Plan is an ambitious programme to deliver on our Councillors' priorities for improving services and quality of life for communities in South Somerset. It is exciting to be part of a Council that is striving to deliver better services and ambitious projects for the area we serve and we are looking forward to working with the communities and our partners in meeting the aspirations set for the year ahead".
