Spring clean for A303

| District

The entire length of the A303 was litter picked in one go; the road is normally litter picked in sections at different times of the year. It was expected that the clean would take approximately two working weeks to complete which was spread over several weeks.

On average, the team have been filling eight bags with litter per mile and it's expected that over 480 bags of litter will be collected in total.

Councillor Jo Roundell Greene, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Deputy Leader of South Somerset District Council said, "South Somerset is such a beautiful place and we want to ensure it remains that way. There is no excuse for chucking litter out of vehicles - it's simple to take it home or put it in a litter bin beside the road. The Streetscene team are doing a wonderful job and it is thanks to their hard work and dedication that this stretch of road will get such a deep clean."

The verges of the A303 will be cleaned eastbound towards London and westbound towards Exeter. The central reservation will not be cleaned at the moment due to special vehicles needing to be bought in to undertake the work; however it's expected that this work will be undertaken later in the year.

Over 480 miles of road in South Somerset is litter picked on a regular basis by South Somerset District Council's Streetscene Team.
