Former Queensway car park brought to life with 24 affordable apartments
The official opening of 24 affordable rented apartments has been marked with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Ben Jacobs Court development in Queensway in Yeovil.
The former car park is now home to eight one-bedroom and 16 two-bedroom apartments which will all be available for affordable rent. South Somerset District Council (SSDC) has worked closely with the social housing provider Stonewater and Ashcot Construction as well as providing support with funding to build these new homes.
Hayley Legg, one of the new residents of Jacobs Court, said: "It's very convenient to the town and the rent is really reasonable. We have all the facilities that we need and Stonewater is only an email away so we can contact them if we ever need them."
Another resident, Brenda Wawel, said: "My flat means that I'm close to the doctors and shopping. Now that I have retired, it's all really convenient."
The new apartments are to be allocated through SSDC's choice based lettings system which prioritises local people in need of affordable rent housing.
Councillor Ric Pallister, Leader of South Somerset District Council and Executive member for Housing, said: "Stonewater has once again gone 'above and beyond' in delivering 24 outstanding homes for the people of South Somerset in the very heart of our major town where the need is greatest. The build quality and the finish are to a very high standard and I am delighted that these are not just another property but a real home that people want to live in and are proud of."
Additionally, local artist Simon Ridley has been commissioned to create a piece of art for the new residents to enjoy. It depicts the first UK motor car with an internal combustion engine - built by Ben Jacobs and the Petter family in 1895 in Yeovil. This artwork has been a part of Stonewater's commitment to creating a 'sense of place' in its development. The development is named after Ben Jacobs and his family members were invited to the ceremony to see the artwork.
