Step out and join our new Health Walks
Health Walks have been set up in South Somerset allowing more residents to enjoy the health and social benefits that walking brings.
Taster events in Norton sub Hamdon and Keinton Mandeville were held during September in the hope that these will become regular if volunteers to lead further future sessions can be found.
Walking is a normal, everyday activity, which is why we forget it's actually exercise at all. Being active has many health benefits. It can help us stay healthy, reduce the risk of getting serious illnesses, including heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. Physical inactivity has an impact on health comparable to that of smoking. Walking also helps to maintain a healthy weight, helps you sleep and feel better. It's a great way to meet people and explore the outdoors. And it's free!
Councillor Sylvia Seal, Portfolio Holder for Leisure & Culture at South Somerset District Council said, "Our Health Walks are very successful across the district. Walking has many health benefits, but there is also a social element to the Health Walks that allows residents to meet new people and get out the house to enjoy the outdoors. The Health Walks wouldn't be able to take place without the help of our wonderful volunteers so a big thanks to all that lead the sessions."
If you would like to meet new people and help them become more active, we can offer you free training to become a Health Walk Leader.
