Official public consultation on Draft Traffic Regulation Order for Middle Street in Yeovil to commence

The official public consultation on the application submitted by South Somerset District Council (SSDC) to Somerset County Council for a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) will now begin on Thursday 14 March.

The TRO seeks to pedestrianise the top end of Middle Street in Yeovil town centre and the application was submitted following an extensive consultation period by SSDC in late December and early January.

As part of the official decision making process, Somerset County Council must now undertake their own public consultation which will last for a total of three weeks.

Councillor Peter Gubbins, executive member for Yeovil Refresh, said: “Yeovil town centre needs to keep up with changes in shopping habits, people want experiences in town centres these days. Creating a new pedestrianised area, effectively extending what we currently have, plus improving the quality of the space could deliver a real impact in the heart of the town. Not only that, the proposal should also improve pedestrian safety.

How can I view the proposals?

The full proposals will be available to view online at www.somerset.gov.uk. There will also be accompanying displays at South Somerset District Council’s Brympton Way office in the reception area, the Yeovil Library on King George Street and at County Hall, Taunton.

What do the TRO proposals aim to do?

This proposal seeks to remove traffic from the top of Middle Street. Disabled bays and loading bays will be moved to adjoining streets with some disabled bays being created on Peter Street car park, close to disabled public toilet facilities.

Disabled spaces will also be created on Wine Street and Union Street to accommodate the demand for spaces. The Yeovil Refresh Board have also agreed to look at providing further disabled parking in the town centre in the future.

What are the benefits of pedestrianising Middle Street?

The current Blue Badge holder arrangements are far from perfect in Middle Street, with narrow pavements restricting users and car doors opening into oncoming pedestrians. Pedestrianising the top of Middle Street will also create a safer environment and assist visitors with visual or hearing impairments. It will help to create a family friendly space, without the need to worry about traffic.

It is also currently extremely difficult to load and off load wheelchairs with the narrow pavements and high volume of pedestrian users in the area. Providing alternative Blue Badge holder parking at Peter Street Car Park will be much safer with the additional benefit of the accessible toilets.

Markets and events could be held more readily in the area which will create more activity. There will be a reduction in air pollution and increased opportunity for outdoor café culture.

There is currently a fully pedestrianised section sitting just below the top of Middle St and by joining the two areas together and clearing some of the street clutter, it could create a lovely, vibrant, pleasant place to dwell and move through. How can I have my say on the proposals?

Comments and representations can be made, in writing, to Somerset County Council, Traffic Management, B2 West, County Hall, Taunton TA1 4DY and received no later than the 3rd April; alternatively email trafficmanagement@somerset.gov.uk.

Once the official public consultation period ends, both Somerset County Council and South Somerset District Council will consider the comments and representations and a decision on whether or not to proceed with the proposal as advertised will be made.
