Work starts to create a brand new play area at Greenfylde Close in Ilminster

| Your Area West

Work began this week to create a new play space for children to enjoy at the Greenfylde Close site in Ilminster.

South Somerset District has taken ownership of the site and is creating a play area that will include a large castle, climbing frame and agility trail.

A public consultation was carried out last October and helped inform the final design, which provides a wide range of play opportunities for all ages and abilities. There is lots of themed play equipment in the design to help inspire lots of imaginative play that encourages children to play for longer and to have a fun and joyful experience.

The play area will include:

  • Large castle climbing frame for imaginative play
  • Basket swing
  • Spring see saw
  • Accessible dish roundabout
  • Agility trail
  • Toddler palace and fortress climbing frame
  • Seating and bin
  • Metal bow top fencing and two pedestrian gates
  • Cycle rack
  • Landscaping

The play area is a requirement of the planning permission for the housing development on Canal Way by Persimmon Homes and is 100% funded by the housing developer. Officers of the Council’s new Locality Team have designed the play space and will are project managing its delivery.

Val Keitch, Leader of the Council and Ward Member for Ilminster, said: “I’m delighted to see the work started on the play area, this has been going on for a while and it will provide a much needed amenity to the people on this development and the children of this area.”

Construction of the play area will be carried out by local Somerset company Play UK (Playgrounds) Ltd. Construction will be in two phases with the first phase seeing the installation of the majority of the play equipment, fencing and street furniture. The second phase will include the installation of the large castle climbing frame which is due for delivery later this spring/summer.

The new Play Area is intended to help meet the play needs generated by the housing development and provide children and families with a play area that can be easily walked or cycled to within around five minutes.
