Graduate scheme is launched to develop vital skills for local authorities in Somerset

| District

Five local authorities in Somerset have expressed their pride at the launch of the Somerset Local Government Graduate Scheme (SLGGS).

The programme will give five graduates the chance to gain the experience they need in the ever-evolving landscape of local government.

The new scheme will bring five of Somerset’s councils together to give each successful graduate the unique opportunity to complete five placements.

These are:

  • Mendip District Council
  • Sedgemoor District Council
  • Somerset West and Taunton Council
  • South Somerset District Council
  • Somerset County Council

Each of the councils will have one graduate per four month period. With the start of a new placement, the graduate will be given the opportunity to express their interests and specify which departments they’d like to work within. These could include planning, communications, or even environmental health.

The successful candidates will receive a number of benefits throughout the scheme. Not only will they leave with experience in working across five local authorities, but they’ll have the chance to use and develop the skills and knowledge they picked up throughout their studies, learn from experienced and enthusiastic colleagues and begin shaping their future careers.

Lauren Pilton is currently in a graduate position in one of Somerset’s local authorities. She said: “This graduate scheme is unlike anything I came across when I was looking for a role after leaving university. It’s such a unique opportunity. My time at the Council has been hugely valuable to me. I feel confident in my capabilities and I know what steps I want to take next.”

Giving the graduates the opportunity to tailor their experience gives them control over which aspects of local government they want to focus on, allowing them to develop skills and influence change, whilst we help create future leaders.
