The European Parliamentary elections are coming: It’s your vote – use it, don’t lose it

Thursday 23 May gives voters the chance to have their say on who represents the South West region of the UK in the European Parliament.

The UK is currently represented by 73 MEPs at the European Parliament. There are currently 12 European electoral regions in the UK and each region is represented by between three and 10 MEPs –

You must be registered to vote, with deadlines fast approaching:

  • Register to vote in the European Parliament elections by midnight on Tuesday 7 May 2019. If you are not already registered to vote you can register at
  • If you want to vote by postal vote, you must have completed a postal voter registration application by 5pm on Wednesday 8 May. To apply to vote by post, you should download and complete the form from the Your Vote Matters website. After completing the form, you""ll need to print it, sign it, and send it back to the Electoral Registration Office (The Returning Officer, South Somerset District Council, The Council Offices, Brympton Way, Yeovil, Somerset, BA20 2HT) before the deadline.
  • You can also apply for a proxy vote on the Your Vote Matters website. This mean that if you aren""t able to cast your vote in person, you can have someone you trust cast your vote for you. The deadline to apply to vote by proxy is 5pm on Wednesday 15 May.

The Statement of Parties and Individual Candidates nominated for the European Parliamentary election for the South West region has been posted online so you can see who you can vote for.

The elections to the European Parliament will be held between 23 and 26 May 2019. A total of 751 Members of the European Parliament currently represent more than 512 million people from 28 member states.  The Members of the European Parliament are grouped by political affinity and not by nationality.
