Settlement Role and Function Study

South Somerset District Council employed consultants to undertake a study of the role and function of settlements in South Somerset.
The  Settlement Role and Function Study [6Mb] (pdf document) was carried out to inform the spatial strategy and settlement hierarchy in the Core Strategy, and therefore indicate which settlements are the most sustainable locations for future development in the district. The study will be used alongside other evidence, including consultation responses and environmental constraints, to identify settlements in South Somerset that meet the following policies in the emerging Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS):
  • Development Policy A "Strategically Significant Cities and Towns (SSCTs)" -Yeovil is the only settlement in South Somerset classed in this policy (set out in the emerging Regional Spatial Strategy)
  • Development Policy B "Market (and Coastal) Towns"
  • Development Policy C "Small Towns and Villages"
