Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support

Council Tax Support Scheme Consultation

Consultation on the Council Tax Support scheme for the New Somerset Council is now live.

The new scheme will harmonise support for working-age people on low incomes across the county and will come into effect with the creation of the new Council on 1 April 2023.

All councils provide support for people on low income and benefits though council tax support schemes, in effect a discount on council tax.  Somerset’s four district councils currently offer varying levels of support, between 80 and 100 per cent for those on the lowest income.  The proposals currently published for consultation propose bringing up the level of support to the highest currently offered, with a 100 per cent discount for those on the lowest income.

The scheme is intended to be straighthood for claimants and simple to administer.

The consultation asks for your views on each part of the proposals.

The consultation is available here and runs until 19 September.

The scheme for pension age applicants is set by Government and will continue unchanged.

Background papers to the consultation are available here.

Thank you. You response is appreciated.
