Planning

Do I need planning permission?

It is recognised that planning can be a complicated process and not all developments require planning permission. However, if you do carry out any work that needs planning permission, without obtaining it, enforcement action may be taken in respect of your property.

If you are looking to improve your home, find out if you need planning permission on the planning portal.

If you are planning a commercial or residential development, view the detailed guidance found on the Portal.

Note that, even if you do not require planning permission, you may still need building regulations approval.

Check our mapping software to find out if your property is a listed building or in a conservation area. You should also review your property’s planning history for conditions removing permitted development rights imposed at the time of construction or conversion. These factors may mean you will need to apply for planning permission for work that would otherwise be allowed.

If you are still unsure, you may benefit from our Pre-Application Advice Service.
